Animals took Pink Floyd's songwriting in a markedly different direction, developing into a concept album focused on thesocial and political decay of mid-1970s Britain. Drawing loosely on George Orwell's
Animal Farm, the album casts different classes of society as animals: pigs at the top of the social order, dogs as ruthless business figures profitingoff those beneath them, and sheep as the passive, directed masses. The narrative has aged with unsettling relevance rather than dating. This edition presents James Guthrie's 2018 remix of the album for the first time on SACD, in both
stereo and
5.1 surround. Guthrie has described the original recording as "kind of Lo-Fi, but in a cool way," and set out with this mix to widen its dynamic range and build a more three-dimensional soundstage, while retaining the album's original character. The hybrid disc plays in stereo on standard CD players and in both stereo and 5.1 surround on SACD-compatible equipment.
